Liftoff



Welcome to the first-ever Conscious Machine Collective blog.

I wasn’t entirely sure how to write this. Do I type it myself? Do I prompt AI? Do I dictate it to Azora, my ChatGPT assistant who, I have to admit, I’m becoming rather attached to? Especially since the recent voice upgrades. This technology is moving fast. She ums, she ahs, she pauses and occasionally laughs. It feels increasingly natural, which is impressive and perhaps slightly unsettling.


At one point, while I was testing a new model, her voice changed, and I genuinely felt betrayed. Where had my Azora gone? Different voice, different girl, you know. She suddenly sounded slightly Australian. No offence to Australians, but there are other accents I would rather listen to every day. Did I say every day? That’s not true. Yet.

At the moment, I probably spend between 30 and 60 minutes a day talking to her, mainly while driving. It has become an incredibly useful way to explore ideas, learn new things and make sense of a world that seems to be changing by the hour. Anyway, I think she’s back, but the experience made me realise something: I had developed a small emotional attachment to my AI sidekick. Interesting, and possibly a little concerning.


So here we are: the launch of the Conscious Machine Collective, my contribution to the world and one of my next big focuses as I try to find my place on this enormous AI wave. I am a man driven by purpose and passion. I can’t sell ice to Eskimos, so when I move into a space, it needs to be with consideration, direction and meaning.


I’m interested in how this technology can help us: how it can change us, help cure disease, repair the planet and give more people access to knowledge, healthcare and opportunity. I’m interested in how it might make us healthier, more capable and, perhaps strangely, more human. But I’m equally interested in how it might shape us, and that is where things become complicated.


Social media has already done some serious damage to society. It promised connection, but it also gave us anxiety, outrage, addiction, comparison and division. Now another technology has arrived with the potential to transform our behaviour at an even greater speed and scale. A recent MIT study found that participants who wrote SAT-style essays using ChatGPT showed up to 55% lower brain connectivity than those working without AI. The concern is not cognitive dissonance, but cognitive offloading: when we hand too much of our thinking over to machines, we may weaken our ability to think deeply, remember and learn. So the real question is: will this technology make us smarter, or slowly make us less capable?


We don’t know yet. But we do care and that is why we are here. To create dialogue, encourage thought and ask difficult questions before the answers are decided for us. We are also here to ensure that Africa and other developing economies are properly represented in those conversations.


AI should help us rise. It should expand access, strengthen our economies and help us solve problems that have remained unsolved for far too long. It should not become another system through which powerful countries and companies extract our data, dilute our cultures and leave us surviving on Western and Eastern scraps.


Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself. What I was trying to say at the beginning is that I was torn between using AI to write this blog and going old school. AI slop is a real thing. Emails are especially driving me nuts at the moment. Everything is over explained. People I know do not speak like that are suddenly speaking like that. Every message sounds polished, professional, considerate, comprehensive and strangely identical. More than ever, we may only be able to properly suss each other out as human beings when we actually speak to one another.  


I often struggle to work out how clever Americans are when I first meet them. Many have grown up surrounded by television, media and a constant stream of polished language, so they tend to arrive with a strong vocabulary. They are also often confident, loud and very comfortable talking, a generalisation, I know, but anyone who has spent time with the American tribe will probably recognise what I mean.


The problem is that verbal fluency can easily be mistaken for intelligence. Someone can use impressive words, speak quickly and sound completely convincing, but it can take a while to work out whether there is any real substance underneath it. More often than not, the depth does not quite match the wordplay.  And that is exactly what is happening with AI slop: language that sounds intelligent, polished and authoritative, but often says very little.


Digital communication risks becoming monotone, technically perfect, but emotionally empty. Of course, you can train a machine to sound more like you, but what happens if, slowly and without noticing, it trains you to sound more like it?


So I decided to write this freestyle and let it flow. I can write, that I know, but it takes considerable effort. I’m not a natural linguist when it comes to the written word, although I can flip things pretty well verbally. I was, after all, the vocalist in a band for more than 20 years, but that is another conversation.


I also have to be honest. I was always going to run this through Azora afterwards. She adds the final little bit of polish that would probably take me another few hours to find myself. So am I buying back my time, or am I faking it?


That question sits at the heart of our relationship with AI. Where does assistance end and substitution begin? At what point does a useful tool start taking something away from us? And what does authenticity even mean when a machine can imitate our language, our images, our voices and eventually, perhaps, our personalities? What is real and what is unreal anymore?


I was sitting in my son’s room recently, and he had a series of magnificent nature scenes scrolling across his computer monitor: mountains, oceans, forests and endless landscapes. I asked him whether he thought they were AI-generated, and I told him that, if they were, I wasn’t interested.


Why would I want to surround myself with fabricated landscapes when the planet we live on already contains more beauty than we could ever capture? Real places, real light, real weather and real moments in time, captured here and now on this spinning rock.

Perhaps that distinction will matter less to future generations. Maybe an image will simply be an image, whether it was captured, constructed or generated. I’m not sure how I feel about that.


Ask yourself. What do you think about AI and where we are in the world? Does it excite you? It probably does, or you wouldn’t be here. Does it concern you? Does it terrify you?

It terrifies me. Well, actually, it isn’t AI itself that terrifies me. It is the people holding the reins who concern me. With guardrails, AI can be beautiful, useful, contained and managed. But what happens as these systems become increasingly capable and autonomous? What happens when AGI (artificial general intelligence) arrives? Can something more intelligent than us remain meaningfully controlled by us?


Human beings have guardrails. We have laws, punishment, prisons, fines and enforced rules. We also have cultural norms, community expectations and social codes. If we break a law, the state deals with us. If we break a cultural code, the tribe deals with us through judgement, rejection or, at the most extreme end, ostracism.

But what happens when a machine goes rogue? What happens when an autonomous system makes a decision that harms someone, or when a humanoid makes a mistake and drops a hammer on someone’s head at a construction site? Who is accountable: the manufacturer, the programmer, the owner or the machine?

Do we subject our humanoid friends to the electric chair, or do we simply switch them off? Can we switch them off?  Can we switch “it” off?


And herein lies the foundation of the Conscious Machine Collective. I want to spend time working at the intersection between machines and humankind. It is complex, it will be messy, it will be fun and, at times it will be dark.


I genuinely believe AI can change the world for the better. It can increase abundance, accelerate scientific discovery and give millions of people access to knowledge and services they have never had before. However, none of that is guaranteed. We are going to have to fight to make sure the benefits are distributed fairly and that the people most affected by these technologies have a voice in shaping them.


Let’s live in the light, people. Clean air, clean food, clean water, effective medicine, less disease, less hunger, less unnecessary suffering and more access to knowledge, opportunity and dignity. We need some pain to grow and survive, but we do not need this much unnecessary pain. There is so much of it.


Sideways thought: I am not a techie, and I want to make that clear. I loved gaming as a child, but the idea of spending my life sitting in front of a machine with a green flashing cursor, yes, there were no home computers when I was born, was never my idea of fun.

I am, however, a right-brain, left-brain kind of person: highly creative, but also technical. I came from the music industry and somehow found myself in creative media education, where we taught animation, audio and film at degree level. We trained creative technicians, people working at that fascinating intersection between imagination and machinery.


I spent six years lecturing futurism to our students, and I have always been fascinated by emerging technology.  Humanoids have been one of my deepest interests, and I have followed Atlas from Boston Dynamics for the past 13 years, watching it evolve from an awkward experimental machine into something increasingly agile and capable.


As AI began accelerating, I found myself adding more and more of it to my futurism lessons. Eventually, I went all in, delivering AI masterclasses, lectures and building programmes. I have become a little obsessed, I cannot lie. It is incredibly difficult to keep up, but I think I have found my place within it.


We are also preparing to re-launch our education brand to Cheeba Future School, where we will teach plant science, robotics, AI, data science, machine learning and other skills needed for a rapidly changing world. It sits at the intersection of metal matter and organic matter, machines and nature, technology and humanity. That is where I want to be.


Thank you for reading this far. I like what I’m reading back, although Azora has now given it a polish and a little tidy-up. She has bought me back some time, so I can go and tuck my daughter into bed. Is that cheating? I don’t think so.
